Is Trust the Missing Link?
A new episode of the Inspired Hygiene Podcast is live—and this one is a must-listen for any dental leader focused on building trust in the dental team. In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Mike Sonick—board-certified periodontist, renowned educator, and author of Treating People Not Patients. While many practices have felt growing industry tension over the last few years, Dr. Sonick believes the root issue often comes down to one word: trust.
What stood out most to me is how intentional he’s been—over decades—about creating a high-trust environment. In other words, trust isn’t a vibe. It’s a strategy. Accordingly, when hygienists and doctors align, communicate clearly, and operate as one team, patient care improves and stress drops.
Why “industry tension” is often a trust problem
It’s easy to point to staffing shortages, packed schedules, and rising expectations. However, Dr. Sonick frames industry tension as a symptom, not the source. When trust starts to slip, people protect their lane. Consequently, collaboration decreases, communication gets cautious, and small issues feel bigger than they should.
On the other hand, trust creates resilience. Teams can have direct conversations sooner, not later. They can calibrate clinical decisions, address workflow challenges, and solve problems without blame. In short, trust lowers the emotional “tax” that drains the energy of great teams.
Hiring for integrity sets the tone
Dr. Sonick doesn’t just hire for experience—he hires for integrity. That matters because skill can be trained, but character drives consistency. Additionally, integrity shapes how someone handles pressure, conflict, and feedback.
During interviews, he listens for signals that reveal mindset. For example, does the candidate take ownership of past challenges? Do they speak respectfully about previous teams? Do they show humility and a willingness to grow? Given these points, hiring for integrity becomes one of the simplest ways to protect culture before problems ever start.
Core values create clarity when things feel hard
Core values can sound like a nice idea. Even so, Dr. Sonick uses them as a real decision-making filter. Integrity comes first for a reason: when integrity is the standard, expectations get clearer. Then the team knows what “good” looks like, even in a stressful season.
Equally important, values reduce confusion. When the practice is anchored in shared principles, people don’t have to guess what matters most. As a result, alignment improves and team dynamics get steadier over time.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
You’ll hear why “industry tension” is often a symptom of lost trust. You’ll also learn how Dr. Sonick hires for integrity—and what he listens for in interviews. Additionally, he shares the core values that shape his culture and why integrity comes first.
Just as important, you’ll hear how protocols reduce ambiguity—and why ambiguity fuels stress and conflict. Finally, Dr. Sonick explains a feedback approach that protects patients, strengthens teams, and builds accountability without fear.
If you’re a dentist, hygienist, office manager, or practice owner trying to create stability, alignment, and long-term retention, this conversation will leave you with takeaways you can implement right away. In a word: trust.
